Steve's Cycling Blog

T -3 months

It’s been a busy couple of months since I was last updating things here. We spent two fantastic weeks sailing on our friends Stuart and Jane’s yacht Epicurios with our friend Lynda also on board – a truly marvellous time with fantastic sailing conditions, great food, awesome company and possibly one or two too many refreshing beverages!

Myself, Adam and Lynda on the bow watching dolphins play – hopefully you’ll get the video of that below!

We got back from that adventure and the next day all our belongings arrived from Latvia – cue ensuing chaos as a truck load of things gets decanted into our house in under four hours. Thankfully the movers also did a fantastic job of putting things in the right place and unwrapping and reassembling furniture for us. Three weeks late and we still haven’t got pictures on the walls, but most other things are now sorted!

Next Sunday I’m off on my annual trip to the US for work with client visits for a week in Spokane, then the FileMaker conference in Dallas, where I’m once again presenting.

I’ve been enjoying keeping tabs on the 2018 version of the Silk Route – they’re about two days ahead of where we were, so I’ve been reading various facebook posts from people there this time, as well as reading extracts of my blog to remind myself of the details I’m seeing in other people’s photos!

In next-trip related news we got a copy of the ‘plan A’ itinerary last week, and it looks like this:

WestAfrica

It might be a bit hard to read, so you can download a copy if you wish.

Some good and some bad in there – the first couple of days look like a tough start with two pretty long days. but then to make up for it we get a rest day in Marrakech which I’m sure will be fun, then three shorter days and another day off (hoorah!).

The three rest days in Dakar are in order to get visas for later in the trip, but will also give us an opportunity to really explore which I’m looking forward to – Adam’s also thinking to come and join me for those days as well which would be awesome! The seven day stretch out of there might be a bit tough though!

I also got a new Garmin this week – essential for the trip, and necessary after my previous one was stolen on my last trip. As a result, you get to see the details of my ride this afternoon as I try and remind myself of exactly how my blog works!

Total distance: 37.5 kmTotal Time: 01:29:30
Max elevation: 153 mMin elevation: 35 m
Total climbing: 356 mTotal descent: -357 m
Average speed: 25.14 km/hMaximum speed: 55.08 km/h

Hopefully I’ve also fixed the connection from the blog to Facebook – it was playing up, something about a new version of the Facebook API, but I think I’ve got that under control – let’s publish this post and see shall we?
