Reflections on Mongolia

  • it’s a huge and beautiful country filled with a whole lot of nothing…! like seriously big, and seriously nothing…!!
  • the people are amazingly friendly and helpful, though very shy (even many of the kids) so if we don’t initiate a ‘conversation’ then though they will be interested they won’t say anything
  • the dogs are not – the dogs are trained to be vicious which makes travelling on your own in rural areas somewhat challenging at times since even on a bicycle it’s impossible to outrun a determined dog
  • the roads are either really, really good (like in the south between the Chinese border and Sanjnsand) or really, really terrible (pretty much everywhere else)
  • the countryside changes quickly and offers pretty much everything, but tends to be mostly arid
  • it’s windy, it’s always windy, it’s windy in the day, it’s windy in the night, all that varies is the direction and intensity (from strong to even stronger)
  • vehicles are mostly old, either really old Russian vehicles (like our support vehicles) or imported-from-Japan more modern, but none-the-less old vehicles.
